Used as a standalone program you bring a picture into Texture Effects by browsing or drag and drop. The first image shown below is the original before any editing. Another of my images image taken at the same location but looking in the opposite direction was shown on a local TV Station and after being chosen as their Facebook Cover Photo for a week gained 9000 likes. The main image I tried it out on was taken a few weeks ago at a pathway under a tunnel of trees. All the editing was done just using the standalone program. Rather than use the standard Topaz Press images for a demo I decided to play around with some of my own images. Another method is to use opacity of the layer you apply the effect on if your program has layers. This allows for quick masks to remove the effect from part of the picture. A very useful feature is a brush tool when you get to editing the effect. If you dislike anything stronger than mild processing of photos the effects can be dialed down substantially using opacity settings. I have no problems but I do have 16GB of RAM. They get a little bit of morning sun before the patio shades them. When the weather warms, I take my seedling trays and place them on the back patio for a few hours each day. Plants can easily be sunburned by the relentless sun, or can be wind burned and die. One surefire way to kill a seedling is to take it from under the protective environment of the grow lights and plant it outside in a relatively harsh environment. How to Harden Off Seedlings Before Planting This only works if the plants have not grown too large and the roots entangled. I like to take advantage of multiple healthy seedlings and carefully divide them when planting them outside. It is also possible to separate the seedlings and repot them. This helps to avoid damage to the other seedling from pulling the plant out. I usually just take a pair of scissors and cut off the weaker seedlings at the base. It is a good idea to take care of the extra seedlings before they get very large. We plant more seeds in each container than we intend to keep to account for low germination rates. They were quite slow to germinate and probably would have been happier with an additional heat source. We had a high rate of germination without adding additional heat, with the exception of our peppers. Our grow light set up is in our solarium which is nicely warmed by the sun. They can be beneficial when growing plants with higher temperature requirements, like peppers. Seedling heat mats are designed to be placed underneath seedling trays and gently warm the soil from underneath. The top of a refrigerator may be a good location to facilitate germination for seeds that do not require light to germinate. Optimal germination temperatures are between 60☏ and 70☏. Place your seedling containers in a warm, draft free location. You can safely sprout most plants in the dark. Lettuce is an example of a seed that requires light for germination to take place. Most seeds do not require light in order to germinate but they do require heat. Once the true leaves appear it is time to move them under a light source and give them 12-18 hours of light each day. The first two leaves that appear (cotyledons) are food sources for the baby plant until the true leaves form and can begin photosynthesis to feed the plant. Most seedlings will sprout in a warm, dark location. When should seedlings be moved under grow lights? They are relatively inexpensive and do a great job of simplifying the process. The easiest way to regulate the timing of artificial lighting is to use an automatic timer. Plants need some dark to rest from the hard work of photosynthesis. Plants will need more time under the grow lights to reap the same benefits as they would outside under the sun. Artificial light is not as intense as summer sun. Seedlings will thrive with between 12 and 18 hours of light each day. It is really easy to adjust the height if the light suspended by chains. For healthier plants, adjust the light fixture so that it is not too far above the top of the plants. When lighting is placed too far above the plant, you will get seedlings that are long and leggy. Ideal Distance Between Light and Top of Plant It is best to use a lighting fixture that will accommodate a minimum of 2 bulbs. You can find them on Amazon here or pick them up at your local hardware store. The lumen rating should be 2,500 or higher. Select a bulb with a Kelvin rating of at least 5,000 to 6,500. Consider potential for gentle air movement when determining your location. Get a fixture that will accommodate 2 to 4 bulbs that can be suspended by a chain and adjusted as the plants grow.Īir movement helps young seedling grow strong and healthy. Select daylight balance in a fluorescent or LED bulb with a Kelvin rating of at least 5,000 and a minimum of 2,500 lumens. Is there an inexpensive lighting system to start seedlings indoors?Ī standard shop light fixture is ideal. Our indoor lighting system should last for many years. It may be inexpensive but it isn’t cheap. It is significantly less expensive than standard grow lights and performs just as well. In this post, we will share how we designed this inexpensive lighting system to start seedlings indoors. Use a bulb with a Kelvin rating of 5,000 to 6,500, and an output of at least 2,500 lumens. What is an inexpensive alternative to expensive standard grow lights? Seedlings can be effectively grown with inexpensive shop lights as long as you purchase the right bulbs. After a bit of research, we have come up with the perfect inexpensive solution to meet our needs. However, commercial grow lights were cost prohibitive. ![]() I have wanted to purchase grow lights and start my seedlings indoors for many years. ![]() One example is the " Blue Raspberry" kaleidoscope, shown at left.Example of mirrored objects in Blender 3.0 One side will show a two-mirror system, while the other will show a three-mirror system. Pictured to the right is Thomas and Carol Paretti 's "Tilt-a-Whirl" where they used a scalloped piece of wood, instead of simply blacking out the third side to outline the mandala. That scalloped wood is then reflected onto the other two sides of mirror, creating a scalloped view all around. Some artists experiment with the non-mirror side of their two-mirror systems. ![]() Some of our most popular two-mirror, 7-point mandalas are evident in the Tidepools line of kaleidoscopes by artists Luc and Sallie Durette of Durette Studios, pictured at left. Depending on the angle of the mirrors, the image can have 4, 5, 6, all the way up to over 100 points! Two-mirror systems use a triangle of mirrors, but one side is blacked out, making a single, circular design which is dramatically surrounded by black. An example is the "Baby Planet" kaleidoscope by David Sugich, pictured at right. Peggy and Steve Kittelson of Woodland Designs have added an interesting effect to their "Sparky" kaleidoscope, pictured at left, by drawing a black line along the "seam" between two sides of the mirror creating a fascinating, radiating effect.Īnother way to change a three-mirror kaleidoscope is to taper the mirrors, from large to small, giving the image a 3D, "disco ball" effect. One can find a three-mirror, 8-point mandala pictured at right by artist Jon Greene of Chesnik Scopes. This is sometimes called an expanded two-mirror system. Instead, some kaleidoscopes with three mirrors are formed into an isosceles triangle of mirrors, creating the same field of patterns, but with a larger number of points to their mandalas or interior images. Most three-mirror systems are arranged in an equilateral triangle, creating an even, six-pointed image. One can see an example of a three-mirror mandala at left in the Small Classic Agate kaleidoscope by artist Jon Greene of Chesnik Scopes. This causes an endless field of patterns that continues up the whole tube of the kaleidoscopes. Three-mirror systems have, as you would guess, three mirrors, which are arranged in a triangle. By changing the number of sides and the angles of the mirrors, artists are able to create a virtual never ending variety of images in their kaleidoscopes. Kaleidoscopes work the way they do because of a series of mirrors placed inside the tube. The different text sections can be edited separately by clicking separately with a single click on them. In the templates section, there are some templates with more than one text line, where you will have to click “once” on the particular text to edit it, while clicking “twice” on the text will select the entire watermark, if you wanted to change the transparency of it or move it. This is not where you will always have to waste your time, because once the watermark template is set and you feel that is how you want to place the watermark always in your pictures, there is an option to even export the watermark template so that the same can be used in the future as well. Watermark can be placed anywhere on the picture (hold and drag the icon).Symbols can be added to text watermark (©, Filename, Date, Time, Image number).Rotate the watermark (360-degree rotation).Add effect to both image and text watermark (75 effects).Change font, size, change it to bold/italic, color of the text.To sum it up, here is what you can do with the watermark template: There are around 75 effects from which any one can be selected to add to the watermark content. There are effects too that can be added to the watermark text or image, and these include the shadow or coloring effects, and some background dark or light shade can be added for the watermark to be clearly shown. For both image and text watermark, the picture can have tiled watermark where the entire picture is filled with watermarks, and this is useful for quick adding of watermark for designers who have to regularly send concept images to clients, while trying to keep their originality safe. The watermark template setting is very huge and great, because you can choose to either use your own watermark logo or image, or set a text watermark and there are loads of fonts to choose from, each of them again can be made italic / bold and the size can be changed at will. You basically have to just select the photos by either dropping them into the software window or by clicking on “Select Images” and selecting one or multiple images, and once the selection of the pictures is done, you are taken to the next page where you need to choose a watermark option. Here”s some insight on what the Visual Watermark software does. With this software, I didn”t need to worry about anything. It does not mean that the other image editing softwares are heavy and large, but one has to admit the fact that the Adobe Photoshop is not easy, it is not light and one needs some skills to use, even to just layer a watermark over an image. The best part about the Visual Watermark software is that it is easy to use, and it doesn”t affect the performance of the Mac at all. The tool comes in both, free and paid versions and there is a little difference between the two, but as you know, you always get it better when you pay for it. And to add to that, you get to do batch watermarking using this software called Visual Watermark. My recent find has been this wonderful software for Mac that does the watermarking job the easiest and interesting. For Windows, there are several resizer softwares that do the job easily, but for Mac, there is rarely a good tool except for the large softwares such as Adobe Photoshop, but who would always want to put a load on the computers for every little job of image editing? ![]() The best way to keep them safe is at least by placing watermark on the pictures, so one doesn”t take away the credits from you. One doesn”t go to an extent to steal your pictures where you and your closed ones are shown, but there is no stopping them if you are posting pictures online with some objects beautifully depicted. Watermarking your pictures is an important part for saving your captures. Playing a sniper was a little more silly. They branded NHL 21 as a “massive overhaul” and “improvement” to the be a pro mode, but as someone who played the nhl 20 mode I can say it’s much worse now. Way too many people go to buffalo/Seattle this year, and rangers/kings last year. Nhl 20 was so much more realistic where you could go anywhere in the first round even if you play well. If you play decent at all you’ll go 1 or 2 overall, the only way to go lower is if you actively try and mess up. Also, the draft engine is so much worse now. I loved entering the nhl as a high 70 developed player and on a randomized draft order, but no matter what you do now you’ll be a high 60. Also, the ability to play a full season in the CHL was much better than what we currently have. Let me also mention what all the fields above the tests do, since the application lacks any information about them. From the Settings menu you can also change the interval time for individual tests. These block sizes, queues and threads can all be changed from the KDiskMark options: Settings -> Queues & Threads. This information is also shown in a tooltip, when hovering your mouse over those buttons. RND means that test measures the random performance instead of sequential. Here, SEQ means sequential, followed by the block size ( 1M), Q means queues and it's followed by the number of queues ( 8), T means threads and it's followed by the number of threads used by the test ( 1 in this example). So what are those letter and numbers shown on the buttons on the left-hand side of KDiskMark? Let's take the first test: SEQ1MQ8T1 as an example. You may also click on a specific test on the left-hand side, to only perform that test (e.g. To get started, select the disk from the top drop-down (it defaults to the disk holding your home directory), then click on All to perform all the available tests. When you first run the application you'll notice an interface similar to CrystalDiskMark, with 4 disk benchmarking tests, each with read and write columns. ![]() It's also worth noting that even though the latest KDiskMark version at the time I'm writing this article is 1.6.2, the application is quite new, having its initial release in the beginning of July 2020. ![]() The application can also generate benchmark reports ( File -> Save) that you can use to easily share the benchmark results with others, and for future comparisons.ĭespite its name (starting with K), this Qt5 application does not have any KDE-specific dependencies, so you can install it no matter what desktop environment you're using without having to install a large number of dependencies. Under the hood, it uses FIO (Flexible I/O Tester), and it features configurable block size, queues, and threads count for each test. KDiskMark comes with a simple user interface, very similar to the one used by CrystalDiskMark, with presets. KDiskMark is a free and open source alternative to CrystalDiskMark (which is Windows only) for Linux, a GUI HDD / SSD benchmarking software. |
